What is Tanzania's vehicle age limit for imports?

Tanzania enforces an 8-year age limit measured from manufacture date to arrival at Dar es Salaam port; vehicles exceeding it are refused entry.

Tanzania enforces an 8-year age limit on imported used vehicles, counted from the year of manufacture. A vehicle older than eight years at the time it lands in Dar es Salaam is refused entry — not fined, but turned away — which makes this one of the strictest, most consistently applied age rules in East Africa.

How the age is calculated

The clock runs from the manufacturing year on the vehicle's registration and VIN records, not from first registration in China. For the current year, a unit manufactured in 2018 or later clears comfortably; anything 2017-or-earlier is at or beyond the limit. We verify the manufacture year against the VIN before quoting a Tanzania-bound unit, so there are no surprises at the port.

Tanzania's full cost structure

ChargeRateApplied on
Import duty25%CIF value
VAT18%CIF + duty
RoRo freight~$850Per vehicle
Container freight~$1,700Per vehicle slot
Clearing~$350Per unit

Worked example: a $13,650 JAC T6 4x4 diesel

Take our new JAC T6 2024 Champion 4x4 at $13,650 FOB (20+ unit tier). Add about $1,700 container freight → CIF ≈ $15,350. Import duty at 25% is ≈ $3,838, VAT at 18% on CIF + duty is ≈ $3,454, plus ~$350 clearing. That lands the unit around $23,000 before any inland movement — a genuinely useful number when you are budgeting a Tanzania fleet, and well below a comparable new Hilux landed through the same route.

Why the age limit shapes your choice

  • Newer is safer: our newer-model pickups and 4x4s clear without age issues.
  • Budget vs risk: a cheaper 2016 unit may be refused, costing you storage and re-export fees.
  • Which of our stock fits: our new-model pickups and SUVs all clear; among used stock, our 2018-and-newer units (for example the 2019 Tunland and 2021 Cannon) are Tanzania-eligible, while our 2016 ZX Auto Grand Tiger is outside the window.
  • Resale: Tanzanian buyers value a clean import history, which a compliant unit carries.
