Ghana registers left-hand-drive vehicles, and China builds left-hand-drive vehicles. That single fact is why a used Toyota 4x4 or pickup sourced from a Chinese yard can move straight into Ghanaian registration without a steering conversion. For dealers and fleet buyers landing units at Tema for Accra or moving them upcountry, this post walks through how a used Toyota 4x4 or Hilux-class pickup is selected, inspected, documented and cleared in 2026 — and where the real risks sit.
Why Ghana buyers look at China for Toyota 4x4s and pickups
Ghana's Toyota service and parts network is deep, so consumables and repairs for a Land Cruiser, Prado, Hilux or RAV4 are straightforward to source locally. That matters for fleet operators running mixed routes between city and upcountry roads. China-market Toyota stock is left-hand drive, generally low-mileage and well equipped, and turns over quickly, which means clean examples with tidy histories appear regularly.
RuggedRides Export, operated by Anhui Zhongsu Luosi Automobile Sales Co., Ltd, supplies new China pickups and 4x4 off-road SUVs alongside a physical used LHD 4x4 stock. That used stock includes Tank 300, Prado (2016–2019), BJ40, Land Cruiser, Patrol, Wrangler and Gladiator, each with a stock number and real photos. For Ghana, the Prado and Land Cruiser lines are the natural starting points; browse the used 4x4 inventory at /4x4/ and the Prado units at /4x4/prado-used.
What the Toyota 4x4 and pickup range looks like for Ghana
Body-on-frame 4x4s
The Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser are the volume names for buyers who need durability and resale strength. New and used examples are both available depending on the order; see /vehicles/toyota-land-cruiser-300-prado-250 and /vehicles/toyota-land-cruiser-70 for the 70-series workhorse configuration.
Pickups
Double-cab pickups remain the default for fleet and utility work. New China pickups from the brands we carry sit alongside used LHD units; the pickup range is listed at /pickups/. Where a buyer wants a specific used unit, the export desk confirms availability, year and specification per order.
Other used LHD 4x4 stock
Beyond Toyota, the physical used stock includes Tank 300, BJ40, Patrol, Wrangler and Gladiator. These are useful alternatives when a fleet wants a common platform across mixed duties. See /vehicles/tank-300-2025-4x4, /vehicles/baic-bj40-2026-4x4 and /vehicles/nissan-patrol.
Inspection points before any deposit
Third-party inspection before deposit is available, and we recommend using it. The checks that matter most on a used Toyota 4x4 or pickup:
- VIN and build plate match. Chassis, door plate and documents should agree, and the production date should be consistent.
- Service history continuity. Gaps around major intervals are both a risk flag and a negotiating point.
- Engine and cold start. Watch for smoke, oil consumption and rough idle; on diesel pickups check for excessive smoke and injector knock.
- Transmission behaviour. Automatic and CVT units should shift smoothly under light and hard throttle with no flare or shudder.
- Accident and repaint check. Paint depth readings across panels, panel gaps and bolt witness marks reveal bodywork history.
- Underbody and suspension. Inspect mounts and chassis for impact damage or corrosion, and listen for knocks over bumps.
- Tyres, brakes and fluids. Match tyre dates and wear; check pad and disc life; look for weeping under engine and gearbox after a run.
- Electronics. Verify multimedia, cameras, sensors and climate functions all power up and operate.
We document these checks with photos and video on every unit before a deposit is requested. For general inspection guidance, see /answers/.
Documents and certification
Every order is shipped with an export invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. Ghana operates a conformity and roadworthiness regime for imported vehicles, and a vehicle must pass the applicable inspection and obtain a roadworthiness certificate through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority before registration. A pre-shipment inspection at China origin gives you a third-party record of condition, mileage and VIN before the vehicle leaves the yard, which supports the arrival process and protects you if anything is disputed at Tema.
Duty rates, VAT, levies, transit times and warranty terms vary by order and are confirmed by the export desk. Confirm the exact figures for your model year with a licensed Ghana customs broker before committing.
Shipping to Tema: RoRo or container
For single units and small batches, roll-on/roll-off to Tema is usually the economical choice. For higher-value 4x4s such as a Land Cruiser, or when you want maximum protection, a container is worth the extra cost, and two or three vehicles can share a forty-foot container to lower the per-unit figure. Some consolidators route via transhipment hubs, and some buyers combine loads through a neighbouring port and move vehicles overland. The export desk quotes the specific route, method and timing for your unit and delivery city rather than asking you to guess. Route context is at /destinations/.
Payment and landed-cost planning
The standard structure is a deposit to secure the unit after you approve the inspection, then the balance before shipment. Payment is by international bank transfer, and larger or first-time orders can be structured under a letter of credit where bank-backed security is wanted on both sides. We invoice in USD and keep payment evidence consistent with the customs declaration.
Landed cost is not just the vehicle price. It combines the ex-yard price, freight and handling to Tema, origin inspection, and Ghana-side duty, VAT, levies and any age-related penalty applied at clearance. Because the age penalty escalates with vehicle age, a newer used Toyota often keeps that element modest while still saving against a brand-new unit. The export desk confirms each figure per order, and you can model scenarios with the /calculator/.
