Container vs RoRo Shipping: Which Costs Less for a Bulk Pickup Order?

For a single standard vehicle with nothing else loaded, RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) is almost always the cheaper option per unit — the vehicle is driven directly onto the vessel with no container handling cost.

Container shipping costs more per unit, but it buys two things RoRo does not: better protection from weather and handling damage over a multi-week ocean crossing, and the ability to load spare parts, accessories or even a second smaller vehicle alongside the main unit inside the same container.

For bulk fleet orders, the math shifts depending on destination port congestion and how sensitive your cargo is to exposure — some ports handle RoRo vehicles roughly and container protection becomes worth the premium at volume. This is exactly the kind of decision our landed-cost calculator is built for: toggle between RoRo and container for your exact vehicle, quantity and destination and compare the total landed cost side by side before committing.
